The Angry Birds and the Equestria Girls: The Angry Birds In the Friendship Games is a comic book,which is the third issue of The Angry Birds and the Equestria Girls franchise and the sequel to Stella Through the Mirror and Matt and the Rainbooms. It takes place before and during the events shown in the third film. Like the franchise that spawned it,it is labeled with the Angry Birds Legends banner,making it non-canon to the Angry Birds Movie Universe. It is also non-canon to the third film. There is also an appearance by Usagi,who returned from Angry Birds High School.

Plot

At Canterlot High School,Red and Female Red talk to the reader about what happened in the last two issues at the city of Canterlot. She later talks about what is happening in this issue and says that they and the other Angry Birds now become starring roles since Matt and Stella already have their turns. When Red went outside of the school,he sees that a bus leaves from the school and asks Female Red that what school bus is it and what school is it going to.

When they go back to the high school,they go to the gym and sees that the school is preparing for the Friendship Games, an academic and sporting competition held between the school's team, the Wondercolts, and the Shadowbolts from Canterlot's rival school,Crystal Prep Academy. Sunset Shimmer becomes concerned when Rainbow Dash transforms during a pep rally,which made Red surprised. Sunset attempts to contact Twilight Sparkle in Equestria for advice about the development she witnessed, but receives no response. Red then talks to Matt,the Angry Bird who helped the Rainbooms won the battle of the bands,about the Friendship Games and Matt says that he already signed up along with Stella and the other birds,much to Red's surprise. Sunset talks to Red about the Games and it being a great opportunity for the birds,in which he said that the Angry Birds are the smart ones.

Meanwhile, Red and Female Red stop by Crystal Prep,which is attended by the counterpart of Twilight, a school outcast who has been investigating the magical activity surrounding Canterlot High. She builds a locket-like device with which to detect and contain the magic for further study, hoping it will secure her application for Everton, a coveted independent study program. However, Abacus Cinch, her school's principal, threatens to revoke the application to the program and requests Twilight into participating in the Friendship Games and maintain Crystal Prep's victory record. Chuck finds Red and Female Red hiding in the hallways of Crystal Prep and tells them to hurry if they want to participate in the Friendship Games.

Red and Female Red talk to Sunset about what was going on in Crystal Prep but get interrupted by Twilight's arrival. He says to the other Angry Birds that the event he is encountering is strange. After that, the Angry Birds go to the computer lab to plan their uniforms for the Friendship Games while Twilight's device detects Sunset and her friends' magic and leads Twilight to them. As she approaches, the device inadvertently drains Rarity's magic when she "ponies up" after making uniforms for her friends. Sunset then quickly realizes the misunderstanding and considers consulting the pony Twilight in person. Hal tries to tell the other birds that the Twilight they don't know about was about to use the device to absorb the other girls' magic as they exit Canterlot High and see the counterpart of Twilight following Sunset to the portal to Equestria in which the device absorbs its magic and deactivates it. The device similarly affects Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy when they attempt to befriend Twilight during the games, briefly tearing open dimensional rifts to Equestria as a result each time before Red can warn them. The Crystal Prep Twilight talks to him about the absorbed magic and that it also gives her pet dog,Spike,the ability to speak when he is struck by an energy stream.

Adagio Dazzle,Sonata Dusk,and Aria Blaze then return to Canterlot High to see what is going on with Matt in which he said that the school started the Friendship Games and he is in it. He also requests the three girls to watch what happens in the games. After the games' academic decathlon,Twilight wins the competition which makes Chuck worried and that he says to Sunset to do it fast as him and get it correct. Bomb talks about the "tricross relay", a relay race between archery, speed skating and motocross and tells the other birds that he's signing them up. Chuck comments on the relay that he likes all the sports that they have and the way that the sports are combined into one event. At the relay,Chuck wins the speed skating part without any skates and which made Sunset surprised to see that if he has magic but he said that speed is his power. Applejack then transforms after advising a struggling Twilight in her stage of the race, causing the device to steal Applejack's magic and create a rift that temporarily brings monstrous plants through which made Hal frightened. Rainbow Dash "ponies up" to save the other competitors and the other birds, allowing Canterlot High to win the event to tie with Crystal Prep before she loses her magic as well. Frustrated by her own failure to keep the magic under control,Sunset rebukes Twilight for endangering her friends, much to her regret after this sends Twilight away crying,much to Red thinking that she is a Usagi,which made Usagi,Red's friend from Angry Birds High School,worried that he still thinks that anyone who is crying or late is like her and encourages him to enjoy the games.

Accusing Canterlot High of cheating due to their perceived magical advantage, Cinch and the Shadowbolts pressure Twilight into releasing the accumulated magic within her device to harness it against the Wondercolts in the final event. The magic instead corrupts Twilight, turning her into Midnight Sparkle,who then proceeds to obsessively open more rifts that threaten to destroy the parallel world. Matt talks to Adagio and Aria that the event they're witnessing reminds him of the three girls having the siren forms during the battle of the bands,which he and Stella snap into an argument about the events from the last issue which is stopped by Chuck who then talks to Matt about what was going on and that he has seen the first film and that the event will have reverse roles. As the Wondercolts,Shadowbolts,and the other Angry Birds work together to save their classmates and the other Angry Birds, Sunset notices her friends' magical auras and realizes that their magic manifests when they exhibit the same traits as the Elements of Harmony. Gathering their magic with the device, Sunset transforms into Daydream Shimmer,who closes the rifts and battles Midnight. Chuck and Matt see it unfold and Matt thanks Chuck for reminding him what a plot twist the event is. Sunset and Spike then help Twilight regain her senses, returning her to normal.

Both schools,including the Shadowbolts, accost Cinch for manipulating Twilight. Refusing to relent,Cinch threatens to report the incident to the school board,which made Red nervous about her but Usagi tells him that everything is going to be alright. When taunted that no one would believe her account of the magical incidents, however, Principal Celestia concedes to a tie that is celebrated by both teams. Twilight, reconsidering her Everton application,realizes she is happier at Canterlot High and transfers there, where Sunset,the other students,and the Angry Birds welcome her as a new friend. Twilight,the Rainbooms,and the Angry Birds then enjoy a picnic by the destroyed Wondercolts statue. Red talks to Twilight about what happened before and she apologizes to him about trying to defeat him and the other birds. Rainbow Dash talks to Chuck about how he won the speed skating part of the relay and he says that the speed is his power,in which the girls and the birds laugh until it is interrupted by the Twilight from Equestria emerging from the reactivated portal with the counterparts of her friends gathered around it. She apologizes for her absence, explaining that she has just escaped from a time travel loop, before gawking at the sight of her own counterpart in shock and confusion.

In a post-credits page,taking place at Canterlot High School a lot of days after the Friendship Games, Red talks about the upcoming field trip to Camp Everfree,which makes all the birds excited,setting up the next issue to the comic.

CD audio play adaptation

A CD audio play adaptation of the comic book is being developed with some of the Angry Birds cast and the Equestria Girls cast reprising their roles. Like the first,some characters are either silent or have the actors and actresses reprise their roles through archival audio.
